BIOFEEDBACK THERAPY FOR ADDICTION RECOVERY
What is Biofeedback Therapy?
When you give someone a high five, you are consciously moving your muscles in order to achieve the action you want. Other bodily functions, like heart rate, temperature, and blood pressure, are controlled involuntarily by your nervous system.
Biofeedback Therapy teaches you how to control these involuntary processes with your mind in order to help you relax, reduce pain levels, or control urges.
How Does it Work?
During a Biofeedback Therapy session, electrodes are attached to you skin and send signals to a monitor that will detect your heart beat, blood pressure, skin temperature, sweat, and muscle activity. As you begin to feel stressed, you can see your functions increasing on the screening – increased heart rate, sweat, muscle tension, etc. As you try to control each muscle, you receive immediate feedback and are actually able to see the effect you are having on your body.
What is Biofeedback Therapy Used For?
Though it is unknown exactly how or why biofeedback works, it is known to promote relaxation and reduce stress, which can help with a number of health and mental conditions.
Therapy sessions teach you how to practice relaxation and, eventually, how to control different body functions. You could even turn down the brainwaves that activate when you have a headache.
A few of the benefits include:
- Relieving chronic pain
- Improving urinary incontinence
- Relieving headaches
- Reducing high blood pressure
- Relieving anxiety
- Controlling ADHD
- Improving asthma
