To get Monk’d, we must continue to evolve our spirit. We must allow ourselves to rest, rejuvenate and dream. We must give ourselves the opportunities to clear our minds and and bodies of unwanted toxins. Internal and external strength coincide with each other.
In 1997, Ruiz’s Four Agreements was published. With skill and simplicity, Don Miguel Ruiz provides tool to help us evolve and transform our lives. He gained this wisdom from the ancient Toltec traditions. The Toltec were natives called the “People of Knowledge” originating from the Southern Mexico region.
Their community boasts of artists and scientists who were highly spiritual in their practices and education. They believed in the concept of energy all originating from the same one source. Science and spirituality are extensions of this one wholeness.
Don Miguel Ruiz was raised with this Toltec tradition in the rural parts of Mexico. His mother was a Toltec faith healer. His grandfather was a shaman known as ”nagual.” He has taken his cultural traditions and presents to us a simple code of living. Through actions and choices we make, we can create a happier, healthier and more productive life.
Here are the Four Agreements summarized by Ruiz. You should always read the full book! This should be a good enough teaser to go out and buy it.
Be impeccable with your word – Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
Don’t take anything personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
Don’t make assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
Always do your best – Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.
These spiritual laws are simple yet effective. As an evolved Monk, by agreeing to these intentions you will learn to gain power and peace over your own spirit. Instead of reacting to your environment, you get to change your world as the powerful being you are.
Learn to see the simplistic truths that are always present, often too obvious they are missed. Understand the wisdoms that are being shown to you everyday. And then allow yourself the time to master these truths.
It will take work. But this can also be fun. That is the Monk’d balance. Be creative and make this evolutionary process and enjoyable one.
