When an individual is working towards their recovery from drugs and/or alcohol, it is proven time and time again that the single greatest cause for relapse is interaction with kin.
A large part of this is because the family system, more often co-dependent family system, does not know how to react to this change (sobriety) and minimally focuses on areas that they too need to modify.
This illuminates the necessity to incorporate the family system, one of the biggest triggers in recovery, at the onset of the drug/alcohol treatment.
Integrating familial work during recovery work, promotes an understanding about the function of the family system, areas requiring change and support, and reducing misconceptions about getting “fixed”.
Recovery is a life long process that requires the help of those closest to us, our loved ones.
