The world is full of traumatic experiences. Sometimes trauma is mild and easily overcome, but at other times, traumatic events impart serious consequences to those involved. Beyond the possibility for physical injury, traumatic events can harm your mind and create a confusing mix of emotions.

You may have suffered a trauma and not even realized it. Perhaps you know you experienced a traumatic event, but you don’t want to believe that it could have affected you. It’s important to know about the different types of trauma and the symptoms they include.

What Are the Different Types of Trauma?

When you experience a violent, horrifying or terrifying event, you have experienced trauma. There are a variety of harmful situations that can qualify as trauma, and they can include:

  • Abuse – emotional, physical or sexual
  • Accident
  • Bullying
  • Natural disaster
  • Neglect
  • Terrorism
  • Violence in your community
  • War

Abuse, bullying and neglect can sometimes last for months or years. This form of trauma can be particularly devastating, especially where it concerns a child. Some connections have been made between childhood abuse and schizophrenia. Those who grew up with abuse as a child may not realize the effect it had until adulthood.

Other types of traumatic events tend to be single or limited experiences, but they can be equally devastating to the mind and body. Serious injury, natural disasters, terrorism and domestic violence can all create anxiety and fear.

The effects of war on the mind has been well documented. Veterans returning from war often suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and struggle to return to civilian life.

Any traumatic event can have an incredible impact on the emotional and mental health of a person. When you witness or live through a horrific situation, your body and mind may react in a multitude of ways, both instantaneous and long-term.

How Does Trauma Manifest?

After experiencing trauma, the impact may be immediate, or it may take days, months or years for the effects to manifest. Sometimes the symptoms can be subtle, but if watched for carefully, you should be able to discern them in yourself or others.

The after effects can be divided into physical and emotional reactions. Common emotional reactions include:

  • Shock
  • Anger
  • Guilt
  • Hopelessness
  • Confusion
  • Anxiety
  • Disconnected feelings
  • Withdrawal from relationships

These emotions are a natural part of the aftermath of a trauma. You experienced something out of the ordinary, so it’s not surprising that your mind reacted negatively to this event. Trying to deny these emotions can only lead to further disruption of your mental health.

Trauma can also manifest negative physical issues. Physical symptoms may include:

  • Nightmares
  • Sensitivity to startling
  • Accelerated pulse
  • Muscle aches and tension
  • Exhaustion
  • Problems focusing
  • Agitation

Again, these symptoms are natural reactions to traumatic experiences. They may last for a few days or continue for longer periods. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may be struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Once you recognize that you’ve been affected by trauma, you can begin to heal. There is no shame in admitting to suffering after effects from trauma.
